Goodland was a well-established firm from the late 1890s to the 20th century, gradually expanding and acquiring many local competitors.
Trading was not solely in coal, but the firm was also a builder and, general merchant and importer of timber, deal & slate. Coal was transported from the Forest of Dean, the Highley Colliery in Derbyshire and the Florence and Shelton Collieries near Stoke.
