Description
This album might be described as a miniature pictorial history of the Midland Railway, that great system which by 1923 had so expanded its range of activities that its trains could be seen in nearly every important town and city in the country, and whose own empire of wholly or partly owned joint lines extended from Shoeburyness in the south-east, Broadstone Junction in the south, Swansea South in the west, Yarmouth in the east, Leeds, Liverpool, Carlisle and even across the Irish Sea to Belfast, London-derry, and Killybegs, on the Atlantic coast.
The Midland was a magnificent railway in many ways, and in its heyday was one of the most popular lines with the general travel-ler, who appreciated its go-ahead policies, convenient train services, punctuality, and superior standards of comfort.
Although its beautiful locomotives and trains occupy a considerable portion of this album, this is by no means all and many other features of particular Midland interest will be found, rolling stock, stations, scenic views and many other picturesque aspects which go to make up the image of a Great Railway.
